Why should baby teeth be fixed? Don't they fall out anyway
Children typically have 20 primary teeth, of which 8 fall out between the ages 6-8; and the remaining 12 only around age 10. These teeth are needed for proper speech development, as well as mastication (eating). Furtehrmore the primary teeth act as “space keepers” for the permanent teeth that will replace them. Early loss of primary teeth can lead to orthodontic problems later if not handled correctly.
When should I bring my child for their first dental visit?
A question asked so often. If you ask the “textbooks” they’ll say, bring your child as soon as they have teeth. Realistically speaking its rather impossible to do a dental check up on a 6month old without traumatising the mom and baby. Ideally, we would like to see all children before they have a dental problem. In that way we can “set the tone” of the dental environment, without having to do painful or invasive procedures. We usually advise parents to bring their children along when they or siblings come for dental visits. This way they get use to the smells and sounds without having to be treated themselves. Then gradually we introduce them to the chair with just a “quick ride” on the chair or a “little brushing of the teeth” In this way children are introduced to the dental environment in a friendly, nonthreatening way, which makes eventual treatment much easier when needed.
At what age can we start with braces?
You are never too young or too old for orthodontic treatment; the treatment options just change. Speak to your dentist about the best option for you/your child
